By Elmer Rice
.......................................
made by
Ahmed Almorsy

Elmer Rice was an American playright and novelist . He was born in Newyork in 1892 and died in 1967 . His writings were innovative in style ; he cared about the individual freedom confronted by the tyrany of impersonal institutions .He contributed in the American theaterical community with his expressionistic dramatic techniques , such as the flashback technique in his play " On Trial" .
Elmer Rice was often called a reformer , his writing styles included Melodrama , Expressionism , Naturalism , and Relatively violent propaganda plays .

Elmer Rice wrote " The Adding Machine " in 1923 , it was an expressionistic tragic- comic drama about a bookkeeper , Mr Zero , who is driven to murder his employer when he is replaced by an adding machine . In " The Adding Machine " Elmer Rice aimed at showing the impact of widespread Materialism in the world , he lamented the world in which people are to be deemed as mere numbers . Elmer Rice`s opinion is that " a man is to be appreciated according his faithfulness , sincerity , and loyality , not according his wealth -- A shoe stills a shoe even if you fill it with money .

Expressionistic drama is a mid-way between Romanticism and Realism . In general , Expressionism means to portray and incarnate the inner wordings af man`s mind ,soul , and heart . In an epressionistic play there is often one major character that may suffer a psychological problem and beholds the world through it .It has a large number of acts and scenes , the first scene is often a one of real life in order to pave the way for the topic that is going to be shown . Characters in this sort of plays are not traditional ones , they are universal and represent the whole mankind, they named with sympolic names such as Man , Woman , Poet , Police , and etc . Its language is a simple one , a language that is used by ordinary people in their daily thinking . The expressionistic play has a rapid acting accompanied with music and sound , also it is full of theaterical devices such as masks , strange clothes , and unusual lights in order to create a high level of imagination for the part of audience .
